methodist children's home waco texasWhat are my chances of getting accepted to University of Texas or Texas A&M?

I just came from Ethiopia about a year ago. I have been living in the Methodist Children’s home in Waco for about a year now. I have a 3.9 GPA or 94 and I’m on the top 13% of my class. I took my act and got a 17 composite score which I know is not good but English is my third language. I’m taking college English class my senior year and I’m making A’s there. I have 70+ community service hours so far. I’m in the steel band ambassadors (I play lead). I am a member of the Waco youth council and I’m on the advisory board at the Methodist Children’s Home. I am a member of Zeta phi beta youth sorority I’m really scared that they wont accept me because of my low act score. Do you think I have any chance. I know I will do good in college since that’s the only reason I came to America in the first place and I have no family here so I have no where to go after high school.

I know that when I methodist children's home waco texasgraduated in 2006, Texas had a law that said that any student in the top 10% of a Texas public high school was guaranteed acceptance into any TX public university. So, if you can get yourself into the top 10%, and that law is still around, then you're set. Even if not, I think you'll get in. I would also suggest applying to some smaller TX public schools (since it looks like those are what you're interested in), then you could even apply after your freshman year to one of the bigger schools as a transfer student. Try UT Dallas, UT Arlington, and the University of North Texas.
your chances are yes.

what you should first do is retake that ACT and take the SAT, and speak to your school counselor about possible exemptions and allowances due to the language barrier. you can most likely get more time or a different type of test, it happens all of the time. also, its not at all likmethodist children's home waco texase youre cheating, because the test is just as difficult, but just with different standards.

your ACT score is the only thing that could be holding you back, but you need to keep in mind that UT and A&M have something like 90,000 students... i believe the average ACT score there is in the low 20s to mid 20. so you arent THAT far behind.

But you are so highly qualified otherwise that you shouldnt have another concern. you need to make sure that you speak to a counselor about taking the ACT again, and also make sure that you find some way to mention your recent immigration to the admissions office some how. no matter how you cut it, youre different and special, and that difference makes a standardized test unfair for you. you need to make sure that the admissions office is aware of the difference, and take advantage of it.
